Learn with us as we discover more about hydroseeding
We bought a hydroseeder back in the day so that we could fix it up and round out our list of services here at Complete Excavation Solutions. We offer dirtwork of all kinds— and we realized: how many of our clients would LOVE for us to finish off the job by ALSO seeding the property after we are done shaping it? These are the sort of thing we think about for fun. And to us, it is fun— offering more services in-house to make the experience that much better for our clients!
This spring and last fall taught us a great deal about hydroseeding. We know that the pros of hydroseeding are:
It’s easier to seed using hydroseeding than with grass seed and hay.
It stays put and doesn’t blow away like hay and grass seed.
It hydrates the grass seed better so that it grows back faster.
It grows back more evenly.
We learned again to highlight the cons of hydroseeding this spring and last fall. We had an early frost last fall that damaged the hydroseeding jobs we did— that is something to watch out for! No worries, we thought. We’ll hit it again in the spring.
NOTE: The best times to hydroseed are in the fall (BEFORE IT FROSTS) and in the spring (WHEN IT’S RAINY, WARM AND LUSH).
What happened this spring? It didn’t rain a drop for 6 weeks straight. SIX WEEKS.
SO.
What do we do in these types of situations? The answer is easy. Here are the rules we have learned about so far:
Do NOT disturb the hydroseeding for as long as you can (ideally 3 weeks). This means no playing, no mowing, no walking if at all possible. Even the weight of your feet can tear and damage the tiny grass roots while they are growing!
Water thoroughly DAILY. Do not skip this step! If possible, use spring water. Many water systems in towns have chemicals in the water that prevent grass from growing in its earliest stages. Using pure spring water or rainwater is a must for starting grass growing!
Hydroseed at a good time of year. May through September seems to be a good time, with an exception during the hottest, driest parts of the summer (July and August, usually). We had an extremely hot May and June here which wasn’t ideal…
If a client has followed all the rules we shared about hydroseeding (do not disturb the grass while it’s growing, do NOT MOW for several weeks, water it ALOT every day for the first few weeks, wait for at least 3 weeks to start seeing results, etc.) then we will do what we can to make it right if Mother Nature turns out to have other ideas. And if you didn’t follow those best practices— give us a call right away anyways! We want to make sure we find a way to get our customers happy.
